{Stormblood} A Quick Guide to Aetherial Reduction [Rough Draft]
Much like Heavensward before it, Stormblood has given gatherers new Ephemeral nodes to gather from. Although some of the mats used from these are required for some crafts, most of the time the only use for items from ephemeral nodes is for Aetherial Reduction. Aetherial Reduction, in many ways, is like a desynthesis system for gatherers. Lower purity items will only grant you elemental crystals and clusters, but gaining the maximum purity has a chance of yielding special aethersands that are used for certain high level crafts.
Ephemeral Nodes
If you were a high-end gatherer in Heavensward, you were probably very familiar with the concept of Ephemeral Nodes. These were time-gated nodes that only spawned in certain areas in four hour periods of each day in the game (which is roughly 12 real world minutes). They were always set to spawn at the same times with similar items, so if you went to them at the same time each in-game day (about 70 minutes, give or take), you would find them near any Level 70 nodes in that area.
Stormblood has introduced new Aethersands from these Ephemeral nodes. Much like in Heavensward, there are three class specific Aethersands, and two generic Aethersands that can be obtained by any class. Unlike in Heavensward, however, the generic Aethersands are not available on every item that can be reduced.
I have made a quick list of all the ephemeral node types and their contents. There are also ways to get these on Fisher, but this is something I will not be covering in this guide.
Ephemeral Node Rotations
This quick video above demonstrates the way to respawn Ephemeral Nodes in their time windows, as well as a version of the 8/8 purity rotation. To explain in its most basic form, an ephemeral node is easily respawned by simply entering one node in two unique pairs of nodes in the area. Much like in Heavensward, the normal Level 70 nodes are split into three pairs of two nodes. To respawn an ephemeral node, you simply need to enter and exit (you don't even need to collect anything) one node in two unique pairs, and then the ephemeral should return as long as it is still in the correct time window.
So, you have the ephemeral node. Now what?
Well, the 8/8 rotation has four different versions depending on your luck with Impulsive Appraisal II. Much like in the Yellow Scrip rotation, I strongly recommend you replace Impulsive Appraisal with Impulsive Appraisal II as its lowest proc chance is the same as the fixed rate for Impulsive Appraisal. Anyone who collected Aethersand in Heavensward will be familiar with this rotation. However, due to the changes made to Utmost Caution, it is now only used once instead of twice. Whichever Single Mind you use it after doesn't really matter, I just use it after the first one out of habit.
All rotations below cost 600GP, with the exception of the crystal/cluster rotation, which has a 0 GP cost.
Double Discerning Proc
Single Discerning Proc (first proc only)
Single Discerning Proc (second proc only)
No Discerning Proc (crystal/cluster rotation)
An important note
If your ephemeral nodes has an attempts +1, or attempts +2 bonus attached to it, you can still obtain an 8/8 item without any Discerning Eye procs. Look at your node bonus after the first two Impulsive Appraisal II if you had no luck with Discerning Eye: it is still possible to obtain as long as you have more than four attempts available at that node.
No Discerning Proc (attempts +1/+2 nodes only)
